Augmented Joint Precision Aerial Delivery System – AJPAD

AIM OF THE PROPOSED WORK

The proposal aims at finding a way improve freight transport by the means of designing and testing of a precision airdrop system that exceeds current capabilities of these systems. The system will be designed to have increased glide range using three factors: increased launch altitude, speed and glide ratio of main ram-air parachute. The next factor to be addressed is landing precision; this will use available GNSS positioning and will be augmented by the existent EGNOS signals and onboard sensors to guide the system to landing coordinates. The platform will deploy on landing approach the control system augmentation which will help on precisely guiding the platform to landing coordinated by use of thrust vectoring electrical propellers. The platform will be able to communicate with a ground central command unit that will provide real-time meteorological and topographical data of the area in which the platform flies. Also the platform will be able to communicate with other platforms and relay its relative position to avoid landing vectors intersection in case of formation flight.

We will seek means to augment GNSS precision using EGNOS signal and onboard sensors. Active controls and self thrust will help further in putting the platform on the correct landing path in case of high winds at landing, also the planning computer will take into account in real time the winds and other atmospheric conditions that can affect platform flight and decide the optimal coordinates for deployment. Precise design of the parachutes, simulations of opening sequence and fail-safe-guided back-up parachutes will help minimize the risk of failed opening and increase the platform reliability.

EXPECTED RESULTS OF THE PROPOSED WORK

Emergency and humanitarian missions are world-wide spread, even one usually can thing on third-world countries, natural disaster like flood, hurricanes, earthquakes or volcano eruptions are not for a unique location. It means the project development will have direct application world-wide, and to many situations.

Not only the final air-drop system will find direct application on the market, but also sub-systems and specific development can reach a market level and be used for other applications (GPS applications and developments, meteorological).

The market niche targeted by this system is however the freight for both small “cargo express” and “parcel currier” on very short, and/or short regional flight routes.

EXPERTISE NEEDED

INCDTP can carry on the design and manufacture part concerning the parachute and subsystems. We seek partners with proper infrastructure that can carry on the testing activities of the project and partners that can help with the proper certification of the system for operation.
